History
Fessenden was named in honor of Cortez Fessenden, Surveyor-General of Dakota Territory. Fessenden was platted in 1892. The Post Office was established Nov. 23, 1893. County seat moved to Fessenden after the election of 1894. First newspaper was the Fessenden Advertiser. (by E.S. Killie, as printed in the May 27, 1976 edition of the Wells County Free Press)
